If we are scared, why the heck do we play such games?!

The 4 of us get really freaked by those typical Japanese horror film ghosts. Like a lady with long hair covering her face, wearing white cloth. Levitating towards you with hands outstretched as though she is about to kill you, which often appear in Fatal Frame, till the point where we wouldn't dare to close our eyes to wash our faces. Yet, we're so interested in the game. Why????

Why We Love to be Scared...

For all of their stomach-turning gore, horror films and haunted houses attract people in droves. This ability of the human brain to turn fear on its head could be a key to treating phobias and anxiety disorders, according to scientists.

When people get scared, their bodies automatically triggers the "fight or flight" response—their heart rates increase, they breathe faster, their muscles tense, and their attention focuses for quick and effective responses to threats.

"It's nature's way of protecting us," said clinical psychologist David Rudd at Texas Tech University.

If the brain knows there is no risk of really being harmed, it experiences this adrenaline rush as enjoyable, Rudd explained. The key to enjoying such thrills lies in knowing how to properly gauge the risk of harm.

"Young children may overestimate the risk of harm and experience true 'fear.' When that happens you see the child cling to a parent and cry, convinced there's a very real chance of harm," Rudd told LiveScience. On the other hand, "adults may well scream but quickly follow it with a laugh since they readily recognize there's no chance for real harm."

On a higher level

This phenomenon also explains why people can enjoy skydiving, bungee jumping and extreme sports.

"In these cases, those engaging in high-risk activities will tell you that the risk is lowered by their training and precautions," enabling them to enjoy the experience", Rudd said. The key structure in the brain responsible for this effect is likely the amygdala, he added, which is key to forming and storing memories linked with emotions.

The ability to enjoy fear makes evolutionary sense, said environmental psychologist Frank McAndrew at Knox College in Galesburg, Ill.

"We're motivated to seek out this kind of stimulation to explore new possibilities, to find new sources of food, better places to live and good allies," McAndrew said. "People enjoy deviations from the normal change of pace, within limits."

Key to therapy

If exposed repeatedly to a fearsome stimulus, the brain will get used to it and no longer experience it as frightening. This is a key behind cognitive therapies for anxiety dysfunctions such as phobias and post-traumatic stress disorder, where a person's system overreacts to perceive something as threatening when it is not, Rudd said. When such cognitive therapies are combined with medicines, their success rate at improving symptoms "is 80 percent," he added.

Ahh...Sou desu ka...Now I understand why we wish to freak ourselves out. The mind is a powerful thing.

By the way, we won't be gaming for awhile as we have our hands full with Extra Lessons, CCAs and class outings. And soon we have to prepare for our next cosplay event. We still have yet to get a hang of the game Siren...

Okay, Alright. Janice here, I'm gonna do a game introduction here. All the games that has freaked the 4 of us out quite a bit.

Firstly, Fatal Frame 3: The Tormented



Rei Kurosawa is a 23 year old freelance journalist. After the death of her boyfriend/fiance in a car accident, Rei is given a photographying assignment to take pictures of a reportedly 'haunted house'. Upon taking a photograph, the photograph revealed the image of her deceased boyfriend. As she searches through the mansion, Rei is discovering a weird snake-like tattoo appearing on her body. What is also unnerving, is that several of the spirits she sees in the house have it too.
Rei, unfortunately is not the only one who fell victim to the curse. Kei Amakura, Yuu's close friend and Miku Hinasaki, Kei's assistant also had been cursed before.
The curse is a part of a ritual. Whoever is dawned with the tattoo is the so called "Priestess" which will be sacrificed for whatever reasons. Anyhow just know that if you have a weird snake picture growing on your back, it isn't a good thing.

Our Comments,

Sharon: It seems that people who had experienced something painful, for example, losing a loved one would be affected by the curse.

Janice: This game has a really sweet storyline. Though the game is really scary, all the ghost are actually quite pitiful if you think about it.

Sharmila: The ghost is pretty when she doesn't open her mouth

Should you play the game? Yes. Though it really creeps you out, it has a thrill factor that deserves regconition. But if you're those that cannot even watch movies like Scary Movie or Dorm then I suggest you stick to Neopets.


Next game introduction, Resident Evil 4.



This game should be more familiar to many. The sixth installment from the Resident Evil series. This time, In 2004, six years after the events of Resident Evil 2 and 3, the Umbrella Corporation's fiasco in Raccoon City has become a public affair. Following an investigation conducted by the United States Government, several Umbrella officials are implicated to the heinous wrongdoings, and prosecuted. Ultimately, the Government formally and indefinitely suspends Umbrella's business practices, causing the company to become bankrupt and dysfunctional.

United States agent Leon Scott Kennedy is sent on a mission to rescue Ashley Graham, the President's daughter(sheesh, a typical damsel in distress) who has been kidnapped by a mysterious organization. Leon travels to an unnamed village in Spain, where he encounters a horde of unruly villagers who pledge their lives to Los Illuminados, the cult that perpetrated Ashley's kidnapping.

During the course of the mission, Leon is reunited with Ada Wong, a spy Leon met in Resident Evil 2, and Jack Krauser, one of Leon's former colleagues. He also meets Luis Sera, a Los Illuminados' researcher, who aids Leon on his mission. By examining Sera's notes, Leon discovers that Los Illuminados gained control of their subjects by implanting a mind controlling parasite known as "Las Plagas" into their bodies.

After Osmund Saddler, the leader of the cult, discovers that Leon rescued Ashley, he commands his subjects to utilize any means to recover Ashley. A surprise attack by Saddler's airborne minions leads to Ashley's recapture, forcing Leon to travel to a military and research complex located on a nearby island. After numerous altercations with Saddler's fiends, Leon is able to successfully rescue Ashley, and defeat Saddler with Ada's assistance.

Leon recovers a sample of Las Plagas from Saddler's corpse, but Ada forces him to give it to her. She then manages to escape from the complex via a helicopter, and leaves Leon with keys to a jet-ski. Although Leon and Ashley manage to escape from the island, the sample's whereabouts and fate remain uncertain.

Our Comments:

Sharon: Resident Evil never has any happy endings.

Janice: Omg...stupid "zombies". Stupid chainsaw idiot. Stupid parasites. Rawr.

Sharmila: Ashley is ugly and looks like rubber.

Should you play the game? If your a fan of third person shooter, yes. This although is not as scary as the previous game has a higher thrill factor. Or at least to us. This game is also more gruesome. Can you imagine a person with octopus tentacles for a head?! God.

That's all for now. We're currently trying to figure out the game SIREN. Jeebus, it's too difficult....

PS. We need a xbox or Wii. We need more consoles!!!

Janice here. I DO NOT RECALL MYSELF WALKING INTO WALLS! Actually I don't recall anyone walking into walls. And by the way, Ade, the previous bgm by you was jarring to the ear(if you listened to it repeatedly) as said so by Sharon. Oh yes, my code as given by Sharon is a broken record as I often repeat myself like,"Yuck,yuck,yuck,yuck,yuck,yuck,yuck,yuck...." Ade swears more than I do. Also, I do not love serving snack. I do so because YOU cannot survive without any.

You forgot some things about yourself Adeline. Eg. Getting beaten up by angry prositutes. By the way, YOU'RE NOT ALERT ADELINE, YOU'RE HYPER-REACTIVE.

And for Sharmila you forgot to say she set herself ablaze. Also Sharmila is sadistic and violent beyond all reason. For example, "Why don't you try shoot Ashley", "Why don't you try killing the cow", "Why don't you try shooting the wire?"

Lastly, for Sharon, you forgot to say she enjoys leaving desicions to others. Eg, "It's YOUR choice".

Moving on to the quotes. Adeline is really always tired. She said so herself in the previous post. For me, I always ask Sharon to take the controller, especially when I'm panicking(wandering mother). For Sharmila, she is the silent one. Silent but weird. And Sharon, because we keep throwing the controller to her during ghost battle scenes, she always says," Geeze, I really don't like you guys".

The new song is by Enya. Lol. It's better than the previous one.
